FLASH OF INSPIRATION "Emotion in Color" I stopped in front of a picture entitled simply "cloud". On a background of blue had been painted a fluffy cloud. It had wispy, vermiculated edges. The boarders were white and inside the cloud there was a darker mixture of grey and purple and blue. Hmm, I thought to myself, that's interesting... a picture of a cloud. I'm not really sure if it llooks like a real cloud. After all, clouds aren't really those colors and the edges look a little strange, but it is interesting that someone would paint just a cloud. I'm not sure I really see the point.... The next day while running, I saw a cloud. It was a small fluffy cloud, scudding across a patch of blue sky. It had wispy, vermiculated edges. The borders were white and insde the cloud there was a darker mixture of grey and purple and blue. It looked familiar. I realized for the first time that good art is not technique. Good art is emotion. Now I want the cloud picture. Artists have two talents. The first is the mecanical motor skill required to paint. It is technique, honed by the training and practice. The second is more subtle. It is the genius to see images of beauty everywhere; in buildings, people, trees, and clouds - things we overlook f ar too often. We need to appreciate this beauty more and treasure it. Artists remind us to look for and enjoy what we see around us. |
